Frequently Asked Questions About Teen Treatment

Clear answers for parents considering help for their teen.

QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK

Your Questions, Answered

Is my teen struggling?

Is my teen's behavior normal adolescence or a sign they need help?

Mood swings and wanting independence are normal. Get help when changes last more than a couple of weeks, get more intense, or affect sleep, school, friendships, safety, or home life. The Bridge OC offers free, confidential assessments in Mission Viejo.

Mental health, substance use, or both

Is it mental health, substance use, or both?

Often both. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use share symptoms like withdrawal, irritability, and sleep changes, and they frequently co-occur. A professional assessment sorts out which is driving what. The Bridge OC treats co-occurring mental health and substance use together.

Did substance use cause the symptoms, or the reverse?

It can go either way, and both can feed each other. Assessment looks at symptom timing, substances used, medical history, and what changes when use stops. Care for both starts at the same time. A drug screen alone can't answer this.

What are the signs of drug or alcohol use in a teen?

Watch for changes in sleep, friends, grades, mood, spending, or finding vapes, alcohol, or pills. No single sign proves use. Ask calmly and directly, for example: "I've noticed you're sleeping more and missing school. I'm worried. Is alcohol or anything else involved?" Then book an assessment if concerns continue.

Is it experimenting or a substance use disorder?

Look at effects, not just frequency: trouble cutting back, cravings, using despite problems, or continuing after a dangerous experience. You don't need to wait for severe signs. The Bridge OC treats teen vaping/nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drug misuse.

Are anxiety, depression, or paranoia caused by substances?

Sometimes. Substances can trigger or worsen them, and they can have other causes. Paranoia, severe confusion, or sudden major behavior change needs prompt medical evaluation. In an emergency, call 911 or go to an ER; for a crisis, call or text 988.

When your teen resists help

What if my teen refuses help?

Start with a calm talk about what you've seen. Ask what they're afraid of (judgment, losing privacy, being sent away) and let them help choose a first step. You can call The Bridge OC at 1 (844) 599-4927 for guidance even if your teen isn't ready to attend.

Can I require my teen to attend treatment?

It depends on your teen's age, the type of care, and consent rules, so no one can promise you can always compel treatment. Parents can seek evaluation and set boundaries, and treatment decisions should involve licensed professionals.

Choosing a level of care

What level of treatment does my teen need?

It depends on safety, symptoms, substance use, daily functioning, and home support. The Bridge OC offers two outpatient levels, both Monday through Friday, 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, so teens can keep up with school.

LevelScheduleTeen lives at homeBest for
PHP (Partial Hospitalization)5 days a week, 5 hours a dayYesHighest outpatient need; needs daily structure
IOP (Intensive Outpatient)3 to 5 days a week, 3 hours a dayYesStep-down from PHP or moderate need

Weekly therapy suits milder concerns. Residential, medical detox, or hospitalization are for higher acuity; The Bridge OC will refer you if your teen needs them.

About our care

What ages do you treat?

The Bridge OC treats adolescents ages 12 to 19, including older teens and young adults ages 18 and 19.

Who does The Bridge OC treat?

We specialize exclusively in adolescent care, helping teens and their families with mental health, substance use, and behavioral struggles.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat anxiety and depressive disorders, behavioral and mood challenges, trauma and neurodevelopmental needs (including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and PTSD), and substance use including vaping/nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drug misuse.

Do you treat mental health and substance use together?

Yes. Our co-occurring care is integrated treatment that tackles mental health challenges and substance use disorders simultaneously.

Who provides therapy?

All of our therapists providing direct client care are master's-level clinicians. Psychiatric care and medication management are led by our Medical Director, Dr. Alejandro Alva, MD.

Programs and schedule

What is the difference between PHP and IOP?

Both are outpatient levels of care. Partial Hospitalization (PHP) is our highest level of outpatient care at 5 days a week, 5 hours a day. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is flexible transitional care at 3 to 5 days a week, 3 hours a day.

What are your program hours?

Both programs operate Monday through Friday during after-school hours (2:00 PM to 7:00 PM).

Does my teen stay overnight?

No. Our programs are outpatient, so your teen continues living at home.

Will my teen fall behind in school?

Our programs are designed around after-school hours so your teen can receive essential support without putting their education on hold.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

We find in-person care to be more effective, but when schedules or distance make that challenging, we can facilitate virtual sessions.

What happens after my teen finishes treatment?

Graduates are invited to join our free Alumni Program for ongoing weekly support, and teens can choose to become peer mentors for new clients.

Family involvement

How is my family involved?

Each week includes 2 individual therapy sessions for your teen, 1 family therapy session, and a Multi-Family Group. We believe involving the immediate family in treatment is crucial for lasting success.

What is the Multi-Family Group?

A weekly, therapist-led group that brings families together to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and set healthy boundaries, while letting you share experiences with other parents facing similar challenges.
